Dec. 8, 2019 - Green Brook Cleanup #4

For our last big cleanup of 2019, CJST will again be partnering with the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership to clean the Green Brook floodplain behind the Green Brook Regional Center on Sunday, December 8th. We have cleaned this area several times but the river keeps bringing more trash from upstream! (An issue that is slowly being addressed.)  Many thanks to Green Brook Township for providing supplies and trash disposal. We'll need a few volunteers in waders to help clear the blockages but there's also enough to do in the floodplain for everyone!

If you're sad that the cleanup season is ending, or you still need volunteer hours, or you just want to see your CJST friends again, this is the event for you! There is no shortage of trash so we need all our cleanup volunteers!

The event begins at 10:00 AM and will end around noon. We will meet at the Green Brook Regional Center at:

275 Greenbrook Road, Green Brook, NJ 08812

Please park in the lot on the right side of the building (if you're looking at it from the road). Come on out and join us for sign up, instructions and safety...and enjoy some light breakfast provided by Green Brook Township!

Please note that registration/RSVP is important so that we know what kind and how many supplies and refreshments to bring and set up. This is especially true if you are bringing a larger group.

Volunteer Instructions:

1. Bring along your family and friends! It's going to be a really fun and great day! The more junk we find the more rewarding the experience!

2. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing you don't mind getting dirty! Please dress for the weather and in layers since you will get warm while cleaning.

4. We will provide garbage bags, work gloves, tools, sunscreen, bug spray, light breakfast, and water for volunteers.

5.  Please wear waders if you would like to help in-stream.  The water in most places here is not very deep.

So come on out! We look forward to restoring this small piece of the watershed with you!

Please contact Jens Riedel at jens.riedel@cjstreamteam.org if you have questions or if you plan on bringing a larger group.

Nov. 2, 2019 - Columbia Lake Cleanup - Round 2

CJST will be back in Warren County at Columbia Lake as we again partner with The Nature Conservancy and local groups on a watershed wide cleanup of the Paulinskill River.  Columbia Dam has no been completely removed and more tires have been exposed as old sediment has been washed away.  The former lakebed is also much drier now so we can extend our cleanup area.  Some volunteers will be wading in to the river to pull out trash from the channel.  If you would like to go in the water, please bring tall boots or waders, or wear some old sneakers that can get wet and dirty! (But remember it will be November!)  Of course there will be opportunity to clean along the banks and on the lakebed for those who don't want to go in the water.  We will also need help moving the junk from the river and lakebed to the disposal area.  Among the items we need to collec are several dumped televisions and a boat that appeared from the eroded sediment!  We hope that many of our regular volunteers will make the trip and we expect to welcome many new volunteers!

The event begins at 10:00 AM and will end around 2:00 PM.  We will meet at the former boat launch within the Columbia Wildlife Management Area.  Use 11 Warrington Road, Columbia, NJ as the closest address (if coming from Route 80, it is the first right about 300 ft beyond the truss bridge).  Look for the Columbia WMA sign and follow the gravel drive to the end.  You will be directed to park along the side of the gravel road so that other vehicles can pass.  Join us for sign up, instructions, our safety talk, and snacks!

Please note that registration/RSVP is important so that we know what kind and how many supplies to bring and get a headcount.  This is especially true if you are bringing a larger group.

Volunteer Instructions:

1.  Bring along your family and friends! It's going to be a really fun and great day! The more junk we find the more rewarding the experience!

2. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing you don't mind getting dirty!  Bring waders if you have them and want to get in the water.  And dress for the weather!

We will provide garbage bags, work gloves, tools, and water for volunteers.

So please come on out and help the river! We look forward to restoring this small piece of the Paulinskill River watershed with you!

October 26, 2019 - Low Tide "Fun in the Mud" Flat Tire Pull!!!

For our next cleanup, CJST will be partnering with the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership in pulling 30 (or more!) tires out of the river bottom along Donaldson Park in Highland Park.
Both teams have been itching to get into this stretch of the river since last year!  This is our last chance to get in at low tide before "water" season is over for 2019.  So we invite all our volunteers and friends to come out for an afternoon of "fun in the mud" pulling out tires and whatever else we may find!

The event begins at 12:30 pm so we can use low tide to our advantage. Please look for CJST or LRWP  for sign-in and supplies and get ready for FUN IN THE MUD!!

When you enter Donaldson Park, bear right around the loop road.  About a quarter of the way around the loop, make a right and continue to the end of the road.  Park in the lot on the left near the basketball courts.

If you have them, please wear tall boots or waders.  We will need to rinse the mud out of the tires for proper recycling.

Please note that registration/RSVP is important so that we know what kind and how many supplies and snacks to bring. This is especially true if you are bringing a larger group.

Volunteer Instructions:

1. Bring along your family and friends! It's going to be a really fun and great day! The more junk we find the more rewarding the experience!

2. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing you don't mind getting dirty and wet! We will be walking in the sticky mud most of the time.  Please dress for the weather.

We will provide garbage bags, work gloves, tools, snacks and water for volunteers.

So please come on out and help the river! We look forward to restoring this small piece of the Raritan wathershed with you!

August 24, 2019 - Riverside Raritan River Cleanup

Please join CJST for our next cleanup on the main stem of the Raritan River from the Queen's Bridge in Bound Brook to Riverside Park in Piscataway! Our goal for this event is to clean a roughly 1.5 mile stretch of the main stem of the Raritan River and its banks between the Bound Brook, South Bound Brook, Middlesex Borough, Franklin and Piscataway.  We will also be cleaning in Riverside Park for those who do not want to go in the water.  We've cleaned these areas before but there's still more to do!

The event begins at 8:00 AM at the pavillion at Riverside Park on River Road in Piscataway (use 430 River Road, Piscataway, NJ  08854 as the closest address and look for the CJST truck and trailer).  Come on out and join us for sign up, instructions and safety.  Piscataway had graciously offered to provide breakfast and lunch and other supplies for the volunteers!

From the parking area, we will shuttle to the launch point at the Queen's Bridge in Bound Brook.  Life vests will be provided but the water depth is fairly shallow most of the way.  There are areas in this section where the rocks can get very slick so wear footwear that has some tread.  If you do not feel comfortable in the river or don't want to get wet, we recommend staying with our land team which will be cleaning Riverside Park and surrounding public lands.

Higher or cloudy water will probably cancel the water portion of the event but we will still try to do the land cleanup unless the weather really isn't cooperating.  We will try to keep everyone posted.

2. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing you don't mind getting wet or dirty!  For those in the river, you will get wet!  We need the space in the canoes for trash!  If you are staying on land, we also recommend sturdy footwear, clothes you don't mind getting dirty and long pants if you are venturing go into the woody areas.

3. If you have your own canoe and don't mind using it for trash, please let us know when you RSVP.

4. We will provide garbage bags, work gloves, tools, sunscreen, bug spray, life vests, breakfast, lunch, and water for volunteers.

So come on out! We look forward to restoring this small piece of the wathershed with you!

Please contact Jens Riedel at jens.riedel@cjstreamteam.org or 908 240-1346 if you have questions or if you plan on bringing a larger group.

July 20, 2019 - Divide &  Conquer! - South Branch Raritan Cleanup  *Rescheduled due to river conditions and heat*

For our next cleanup, CJST will re-visit some of the inaugural stretches of the South Branch that started the organization in 2013. We'll be dividing into two teams for this cleanup so we can get a longer river section done. So we invite all our volunteers and friend to come out for a morning of fun and exercise pulling out tires and whatever else we may find!

The event begins at 8:00 AM. Please meet at the former flea market site in Neshanic Station next to the Elm Street Bridge.  Thre is a new gravel parking area surrounded by wood barriers on the left side after cross the bridge.  Use 150 Elm Street, Branchburg, NJ 08853 as the closest address for your GPS. Look for the CJST truck and trailers. The flea market will be taking place across the street.  Please be aware there are height and weight restrictions on this bridge so you may need to enter from the other side of town.  Join us for sign up, instructions and safety and enjoy some breakfast on us! From here, we will split into two teams.  One team will start at the meet up spot and clean to Clawson Avenue in Hillsborough.  The other group will shuttle to Clawson Avenue and clean to Studdiford Drive. This will be a mostly in-river event and you will get wet. Due to heavy vegetation, any land cleanup would be limited to the area surrounding the meet up location and along the river trail. Volunteers who don't want to get wet can assist the river team with emptying boats and shuttling volunteers. We encourage volunteers to bring their own canoes or flat bottom boats if they have them.

Please note that registration/RSVP is important so that we know what kind and how many supplies and food to bring. This is especially true if you are bringing a larger group.

Volunteer Instructions:

1. Bring along your family and friends! It's going to be a really fun and great day! The more junk we find the more rewarding the experience!

2. Wear sturdy footwear (closed toes are recommended) and clothing you don't mind getting dirty and wet! We will be walking in the river most of the time in waist high water or less but there are some deeper sections. Life vests will be provided. Hats and sunscreen are recommended. Keep in ind that there will also be sections with thick aquatic vegetation although these can generally be bypassed.

We will provide garbage bags, work gloves, tools, breakfast, and water for volunteers.

So please come on out and help the river! We look forward to restoring this small piece of the Raritan wathershed with you!

Please contact Jens Riedel at jens.riedel@cjstreamteam.org or 908 240-1346 if you have questions or if you plan on bringing a larger group.

June 29, 2019 - Rahway Community Cleanup

Please join CJST as we again venture outside the Raritan watershed and help our friends at the Rahway River Watershed Association continue to clean a section of the river behind city hall and the library in Rahway.  We pulled tons of tires, shopping carts, bikes and other junk out of here last September.  During this cleanup, we will focus on the sections just upstream and downstream of the previous location.  The river bottom will again be accessible when the tide is low although it won't be dropping quite as low as last time.  This will be another wet and muddy one!  We will wade in to pull out trash using a few boats for transport.  Please bring waders or wear some old sneakers that can get wet and dirty!  There will again be the opportunity to clean along the banks for those who don't want to go in the water.  The water team will also need help moving the junk from the river to the disposal area.  Rahway DPW will be handling trash disposal.  We hope that many of our regular volunteers will again make the trip and we that are local volunteers from last year will join us again!

The event begins at 9:30 AM and will end around 1:00 PM.  Please meet next to the library at 2 City Hall Plaza in Rahway.  There is plenty of parking.  Look for the CJST truck and trailer.  Join us for sign up, instructions and safety and enjoy some food for volunteers after the the cleanup sponsored by the Rahway Public Library!

May 18, 2019 - Green Brook Park Cleanup in Plainfield - Round 2!   9:30am - 12:30pm

Please join CJST as we return to Green Brook Park in Plainfield and North Plainfield.  The Green Brook flows through this park after passing through the highly urbanized areas of Plainfield where it picks up a lot of litter and dumped trash.  We made a good dent last year but it still needs some extra TLC.  We will again be partnering with our friend Cathy Cole, a local resident and environmental champion.  We will work a bit upstream and downstream of where we were last year and maybe one of the tributaries.  The stream here is knee deep or less in most places so there will be an opportunity to wade in to pull out trash.  Please bring tall boots or waders, or wear some old sneakers that can get wet!  Of course there is plenty of opportunity to clean along the banks for those who don't want to go in the water.  We will be working with Union County Parks who will handle trash disposal.

The event begins at 9:30 AM on Park Drive between Clinton Avenue and West End Avenue in Plainfield north of Route 28 We will be closer to the CLinton Avenue side.  Park along the road or in the small lot.  Come on out and join us for sign up, instructions and safety...and enjoy some breakfast on us!
